Stamina and Tool Upgrades in Fields of Mistria: Work Longer, Swing Less

Updated 2026-08-27 · 6 min read · Guide Team

Manage stamina like a pro in Fields of Mistria: the 2 AM rule, free daily refills from soup and fountains, raising your max with Stamina Ups, and the full tool-upgrade cost table with the best upgrade order.

Stamina Basics and the 2 AM Rule

Nearly every tool swing, tilled tile, and broken rock costs stamina, and when the bar is fully empty you are locked out of most actions — including some that do not normally cost stamina at all. Managing the bar is the core daily skill of Fields of Mistria.

The clock matters just as much as the bar. A standard day runs from 6 AM to 2 AM (about 12.5 real minutes, with longer options in Accessibility settings). At midnight you get a warning to head home; at 2 AM you collapse on the spot, oversleep until 10 AM, and wake with only 75% of your health and stamina. Fainting in the Mines carries the same penalty. The rule is simple: being in bed before 2 AM is always worth it — losing four morning hours costs far more than whatever you were doing at 1:50.

Free Daily Refills: Soup, Fountains, Bathhouse

Mistria hands out free stamina every single day if you know the route:

  • Sleeping Dragon Inn soup: the cauldron offers a free bowl daily, restoring 20 health and 20 stamina. After you complete the Inn upgrade, that doubles to 40 of each. Grab it after morning chores, before any mining or fishing session.
  • Rejuvenating Fountains: each restores 20 health and 20 stamina, once per day. The Eastern Road fountain needs a Copper Pickaxe or better to reach; the Beach fountain opens after the "Repair the Beach Bridge" quest; the Beautification Project adds another at the Narrows stairs.
  • Bathhouse: a full health-and-stamina restore for a small fee — worth it before a planned deep Mines run.

Stacked together, the free sources alone add 40-60 stamina to your day. Build them into your route so carried food stays reserved for the Mines, where walking home would waste hours.

Raising Your Maximum: Stamina Up

The permanent fix for a short stamina bar is the Stamina Up item: using it fully refills your current stamina and raises your maximum by +20. They arrive as Renown rewards every ten levels (10, 20, 30, and beyond), claimed from the reward chest beside the Request Board.

Two rules for using them well:

  • Never leave one sitting in the chest. A bigger bar pays off every single day; there is no reason to save it.
  • Drink it when your bar is nearly empty. Because it also refills the whole bar, using a Stamina Up at 5/100 stamina is effectively a free full day's energy on top of the permanent boost. Using it at full stamina wastes the refill.

Mid-afternoon on a mining day — bar drained, half the day left — is the ideal moment.

Eating for Energy

Food is your portable stamina. Raw ingredients work in a pinch, but cooked dishes restore noticeably more than their components, so the kitchen is effectively a stamina multiplier: foraged snacks on the road, real meals before the Mines.

Practical habits:

  • Carry a small stack of food whenever you enter the Mines; one deep run outearns three shallow ones.
  • Save cooked meals for away-from-town work and use the free soup/fountains for farm days.
  • Low-value forage (the 5-15t stuff) is often worth more as trail snacks than as shipping income early on.
  • As your Cooking skill grows, higher-tier dishes restore more per inventory slot — inventory space is the real constraint underground, so quality beats quantity.

Tool Upgrades: Costs and Charged Areas

Tools are forged at the anvil outside the Blacksmith (or bought in the shop once unlocked) and each tier requires 4 ingots of that metal plus a fee, along with the matching Blacksmithing skill level. Holding the charged-tool button sweeps a larger area:

TierMaterialsFeeBlacksmithing Lv.Charged Area (hoe/can/axe/pickaxe/shovel)
Worn---1 tile
Copper4 Copper Ingots1,000t43×1 (3 tiles)
Iron4 Iron Ingots2,000t103×3 (9 tiles)
Silver4 Silver Ingots3,000t163×6 (18 tiles)
Gold4 Gold Ingots4,000t266×6 (36 tiles)

Two exceptions: Fishing Rods upgrade cast distance instead of area (6 tiles on the Worn rod up to 14 on Gold), and Bug Nets gain nothing but looks from upgrades — never spend ingots on a net. Copper-tier pickaxes and axes also unlock new interactions: copper pickaxes break the big 3×3 boulders, and copper axes fell big stumps for Hardwood.

The Best Upgrade Order

Copper is scarce in your first month, so sequence matters. The order that serves most playstyles:

  1. Copper Watering Can — watering is your biggest daily stamina and time sink; tripling coverage pays off every morning.
  2. Copper Pickaxe — faster mining, plus access to big boulders and the Eastern Road fountain. Take it first if you live in the Mines.
  3. Copper Axe — big stumps, Hardwood, and faster clearing for farm expansions. Move it up if wood is bottlenecking your town projects.
  4. Hoe or Shovel — nice for large fields, low priority otherwise. Note that March's early heart quest can reward a Copper Hoe for free, so romancing or befriending him saves you 4 ingots.
  5. Rod and net last — the rod only if you fish heavily, the net never (cosmetic only).

Beyond copper, re-prioritize with each tier: Iron watering can (3×3) is the single biggest quality-of-life jump for farmers, while miners should chase pickaxe tiers to keep pace with deeper, tougher rocks. And remember the blacksmithing Time Sensitive skills, which cut forging times substantially once you are crafting in bulk.

💡 Pro Tip

A Copper Watering Can (4 Copper Ingots + 1,000t) is the best early purchase in the game — watering three tiles per charge saves enough stamina each morning to fund an entire extra activity every day.
