Gift Guide: Romance, Heart Events, and Every NPC's Favorite Gifts
Master Mistria's social system: exact friendship point values, heart thresholds from 1 to 10, how dating and marriage work in v1.0, the universal gift rules (and their exceptions), plus a quick-reference table for all twelve marriage candidates.
How Friendship and Gift Points Work
Every NPC accepts one gift per day, and talking to them once a day adds +7 friendship points on top. Unlike many farming games, friendship points in Fields of Mistria never decay and can never decrease - a hated gift simply awards 0 points instead of dragging you backward. That single rule should shape your whole approach: experiment freely, because mistakes cost nothing but the item.
Gift reactions pay out as follows, with a flat +20 bonus on the recipient's birthday:
| Reaction | Normal day | Birthday |
|---|---|---|
| Loved | +20 | +40 |
| Liked | +10 | +30 |
| Neutral | +3 | +23 |
| Disliked | +0 | +20 |
| Hated | +0 | +20 |
Each heart level costs more than the last. The cumulative thresholds are: heart 1 at 80 points, 2 at 180, 3 at 280, 4 at 390, 5 at 530, 6 at 705, 7 at 900, 8 at 1,125, 9 at 1,400, and 10 at 1,755. A loved gift every day plus daily chat is about 27 points a day, so a focused courtship takes roughly one season per two hearts. To test whether an item is giftable at all, hold it next to the NPC - if the gift prompt appears (G key on PC), it can be given. Elsie's daily gossip is the in-game way to learn preferences, and discovered tastes are logged in the journal.
Romance, Heart Events, Dating, and Marriage
Twelve residents are marriage candidates: Adeline, Balor, Caldarus, Celine, Eiland, Hayden, Juniper, March, Reina, Ryis, Seridia, and Valen. They show a heart icon in dialogue where platonic villagers show a gem. Heart events fire at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 hearts; as of v1.0.3 only candidates have them, and a few events carry extra requirements like finished story quests, so if an event refuses to trigger, push the main questline.
The fork that matters comes at the 8-heart event: you choose to start Dating or to become Best Friends. The choice is currently permanent - there is no breakup, and no switching between routes - so save beforehand if you are undecided. You may date multiple candidates simultaneously, and Best Friends are unlimited, though some activities (like dancing together at the Harvest Festival) are romance-only. Dating unlocks weekend dates (added in v0.14), with a Photo Card commemorating the first date of each type and new date types unlocked through Date Inspiration items.
Marriage arrived in v1.0: at 10 hearts with someone you are dating, engagement becomes possible. You can only be married to one character at a time, and unless you change it in the gameplay settings, your other romances convert to Best Friends. Milestones along the way: at 4 hearts candidates start mailing you birthday gifts and can be invited to the Shooting Star Festival and to dance at the Harvest Festival.
Universal Rules: Loves, Dislikes, and Banned Gifts
Fields of Mistria deliberately has no item that every NPC loves. The closest substitutes are infusion-tagged goods: items bought or cooked with the Likeable infusion count as liked by virtually everyone, and Lovable infusion items count as loved. You can buy infused stock, or unlock the Likable Cooking (cooking tier 2, level 15) and Lovable Cooking (tier 4, level 45) perks, which give your dishes a chance to come out pre-infused - turning your kitchen into a gift factory.
On the negative side, some near-universal rules do exist. Almost everyone dislikes junk items (Acorn, Cattail Fluff, Fiber, Hay, Newt, Pinecone, Sap, Sod), bugs, and the weird gifts category (Cat Treats, Dog Treats, heart-shaped animal treats, Clod Bombs). The named exceptions are worth memorizing: Luc loves many bugs (Bumblebee, Fairy Bee, Jewel Beetle, Roly Poly, and more) and likes most of the rest; Dozy loves Dog Treats, the only character who does; and Hayden is uniquely neutral to animal treats.
Finally, banned gifts cannot be handed over at all, infusion or not. Alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and bombs are refused by the children (Dell, Luc, Maple) and by animals (Dozy, Henrietta). Two edge cases trip players up: Floral Tea contains caffeine and is therefore banned for kids and animals, while Chicky Hot Chocolate contains no actual chocolate despite the name and is safe for everyone.
Marriage Candidates: Quick Gift Table
A field reference for all twelve candidates - birthday, reliable loved gifts, and the one thing they hate. (Tastes cross-checked against the wiki; when in doubt, the journal entry for that NPC is authoritative.)
| Candidate | Birthday | Loved gifts (easy sources) | Hates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celine | Summer 14 | Flowers, e.g. Hydrangea (summer forage) | Caterpillar |
| Juniper | Fall 26 | Wine (buy at the Inn), Moon Fruit Cake | Sod |
| Reina | Fall 12 | Cabbage Slaw (spring cabbage + fennel) | Tunnel Millipede |
| Valen | Fall 1 | Beet (crop) | Red Toadstool |
| Adeline | Winter 18 | Tulip (spring), Peach (summer) | Morel Mushroom (and mushrooms generally) |
| Seridia | Winter 2 | Spell Fruit Parfait, dragon-forged items | Statuette of Caldarus |
| Balor | Summer 10 | Snowdrop Anemone (spring forage), Ruby | Ant |
| Eiland | Summer 20 | Chocolate Cake, Candied Strawberries | Frog |
| Hayden | Winter 8 | Eggs, Milk, Cheese from your own farm | Sushi Platter |
| March | Spring 16 | Any ore or bar - mining by-products | Redhead Worm |
| Ryis | Spring 4 | Stone, Wood, Lilac | Pond Skater |
| Caldarus | Spring 25 | Apple Honey Curry | Unknown Dragon Statuette and dragon parts |
Useful non-candidates too: Luc loves bugs, Elsie loves wine from the Inn, Olric loves perfect ores and gems (shared with his brother March), Errol loves mine-themed cooked dishes, Terithia appreciates fish dishes, Dell and Maple love juice, chocolate, and berries-and-cream (no caffeine or alcohol for either), and Dozy the dog loves Dog Treats.
Efficient Gifting Strategy
Birthdays are the highest-value plays in the system. A loved gift on a birthday is worth 40 points - nearly two normal days of progress in one interaction. Circle every candidate birthday on your calendar at season start and stockpile their loved item in advance; Balor (Summer 10), Celine (Summer 14), and Eiland (Summer 20) alone make summer a gifting sprint.
For daily drivers, pick cheap repeatable sources rather than rare items:
- Coffee (100t at Darcy's Saturday Market stall) is liked or loved by a long list of adults - buy in bulk.
- Wine from the Inn covers Juniper, Elsie, and Louis.
- Foraged flowers in spring and summer feed Celine and cover many neutral-day gifts.
- Mining leftovers (ores, bars, stone, wood) handle March, Olric, and Ryis for free.
- Chicky Hot Chocolate is a safe near-universal liked gift once you can cook it, with no banned-ingredient traps.
Route planning helps too. Villagers cluster around the town square, the Inn in the evening, and the Saturday Market, so one sweep can deliver five or six gifts plus daily chats. And remember the golden rule of Mistria's social system: friendship only goes up. A wrong gift wastes an item, never a relationship - so hand things out liberally and let the journal fill in everyone's tastes for you.
💡 Pro Tip
Cooking is the long-game cheat code: Likable Cooking (level 15) makes any dish land as 'liked' for almost every NPC, and Lovable Cooking (level 45) occasionally produces dishes that count as loved. One perk line effectively replaces memorizing twenty gift tables.
